Artifact of the Week
Accession # NU 286 Dog Collar
The silver plate on this leather dog collar reads: OLD ABE.
It belonged to a mastiff dog that was kept as a pet by the officers of the 12th Vermont Infantry Regiment. Old Abe was supposedly killed by a bullet at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, but this has not been confirmed.
The 12th Vermont was on guard duty and not actively engaged during the battle.
The collar was donated to Norwich University by Hon. Urban Woodbury, a Civil War veteran and governor of Vermont, 1894-1896.
